Hostility To Art
According to Plato, works of arts are prohibited in his ideal society because it imitates illusions and hinders the people from knowing the truth and real. Plato thinks that artists are incompetent to explain divine ideas because it is the work of a philosopher. Plato's ideal universe must be based on reasoning and its principles. The ideas of Plato is a significant representation and foundation of western art of mimicking nature.
Plato: Beauty is an Idea
Plato and Aristotle's theories, not devised for an art theory, has elements concerning arts and aesthetics such as their idea of form and content on imitation. Plato and Aristotle's doctrines are two opposing views. For Plato, imitation must be related with Ideal Forms ("Ideas") for a complete and orderly system.
